Founded in 1996, the Webby Awards are presented by the 2,000+ members of the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, and aim to honor “excellence on the internet”. They WERE to take place on May 11th in New York City but then the world fell apart. But the Webbys are soldiering on and now YOU can have a say in who walks away with one. Here’s Shannon to explain.
The Webby Awards have been moved online, and are now taking place on May 19th. And the best part, they’ve opened voting to the public, and you can influence who walks away with an award. You have until Thursday but give yourself some time, because there are MANY categories. Including Best Web Personality, Best Overall Social Presence, and Best Influencer.
And speaking of Influencers, I’m about to make three light endorsements. Or at least tell you three nominees I’ll for sure be voting for!
In the ‘Comedy Shortform (Video)’ category, all the nominees made me laugh. But I’ve got to give it to Billy on the Street. Granted, he doesn’t do it naked, like we do, but the street interview is an artform, and no one’s mastered it like Billy Eichner.
Music Video is always a tough category, and I’m just going to put the cliché out there: it’s an honor just to be nominated. But I have to say, even though Lil Dicky’s Earth is great and often HYSTERICAL, the one that was sexiest and blew my mind the most was the video for Cellophane by FKA Twigs.
Pretty awesome, right? And last but not least, I have to make my pick for best Viral Video! And much as I hate to say it, this one was actually a no-brainer. I am saying “Yes, yes, a million times yes” to Sleeping Beauty Proposal!
That is the most incredible proposal I’ve ever seen, and I’m very happy the man behind it got everything he deserved: a beautiful bride and OVER SIX MILLION views! And hey, let’s also hear it for the illustrator who spent SIX MONTHS on the project!
